I was driving to work around 6am on a road that I typically ride. I saw a cyclist ahead, (flashing tail lights, fenders, looked like a regular commuter, riding with no hands). I slowed as I approached him, gave a wide berth, lightly tapped the horn and waived my hand. I made sure that my whole hand was visible so there we no confusion about my gesture. What I got was a super scary loud f-bomb laden response and I assumed the rider misunderstood my wave. By this time I was a bit past him, so I slowed a bit more and lowered the passengers window so I could say sorry for the misunderstanding and tell him I was trying to be friendly. Not looking my way, he continued on with the super scary loud f-bomb diatribe and mentioned that if I kept harassing him I would be in the fuckin' hospital this morning. I came to a stop sign and made a right turn, he turned right as well. As he's riding behind me he's yelling out my license plate #. I continue straight and he veers off.... strange. It bothered me all day. The more I think about it, it seems like he was wearing headphones or something, cause he didn't really say anything to me as much as he continued looking straight ahead and yelling a prerehearsed threat.

2/28 sunday morning ride -- different meeting spot

copying from the SRV playbook...

(This occurs primarily near Olympic Place.)

Second, the city plows snow into bike lanes, but rarely plows snow out of bike lanes. Fort George Wright Drive has a short bike lane near the T.J. Meenach bridge to provide safer access to SFCC, but it's full of snow that was plowed from the other lanes, making it unusable.

Is there anyone at city hall that cares about these issues? And more importantly, are there individuals in the street department and in the police department with the will to address these issues?

- Ventura

Sunday 2/08: Breakfast and Bowling

This is Jon's idea. I don't have a strong preference on wheel size...either 700 or 650b. Disc brakes (at least one) are preferred.

My target budget is about $1,000 but I know I will probably go over this as I add all the bells and whistles I want...well, maybe only bells.

My research has found three options. The Kogswell P/R, a Surly Long Haul Trucker frameset with non-standard components and the fully built Gary Fisher Simple City 8 (possibly with a switch of the handlebars). I also have taken a look at some of the Dutch bikes (Azor Opa and Secret Service in particular), which are appealing in a lot of ways, but they just seem too heavy, and too expensive.

Does anyone have an opinion on any of these bikes individually or compared to each other? Are there other bikes that I should be considering?

Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

Andy

b-day Trifecta Ride

Hey all,

It's that time of year again. Time for the 3rd annual Trifecta. Haven't decided on the day yet, but it will be Nov. 8th, 9th 10th or 11th. Kinda depends on weather and schedules. We can agree on a central location to meet. Start at 9amish and hit Beacon Hill-Riverside-The Bluff. We'll finish at Bennidito's for some brews and pie. Nice trail riding with some asphalt in between. Let me know.
