    Wool jersey: Gauging interest

    Hey all,

I'm going to be doing a couple cyclocross races this fall. I've talked about this too much, now I'll have to do it. Therefore, I must have a bitchin jersey. Patrick (the Scoop) is buying my jersey -- I'm getting a short sleever from Portland Cycle wear. See here.

It will say "Team Fred" and "Spokane, WA". Fred is explained here.

Anyway. The design/font/color scheme etc is up to Patrick, since he's buying my jersey.

If you are interested in getting in on this, there is a price break on the jerseys at 12 units. The core cost will be $52. But then there will be extra cost for the lettering/flocking/whatever and likely for shipping. my guess is that you'd be in the $75 range. which is typcial for a wool jersey. but a good deal for one that says "team fred"

     Any interest?

I did not realize that the term Fred had become so convaluted. How can it now mean opposite things? So a Fred can be a (as I remember it) someone with no skills but lots of flash or it can be someone with no flash but lots of skills. Of course I was always convinced that most bike slang is invented by writers at Rodale Publications just so they can print glossaries that are read eagerly by novice riders hoping to get hip to the scene.

Have fun with the cyclocross. I always enjoyed the hour of power but the local series has lost some of it's folksiness. There are always some barrier practice session down at high bridge. Perhaps we can set up some training races. I'll let you know when that happens. I had the good fortunbe of buying a cyclocross and shortly after meeting Pete Prebus the Junior National CX champion. He spent an afternoon showing me how to efficiently deal with the barriers and it made all the difference.

...i could be interested if a 2X is really a 2X, if you know what I mean...okay, nobody cares, but just so they uderstand, I though a Fred was Fred J. Dukes aka "The Blob" one of several arch enemies of the X-Men...and for me it had everything to do with a 280lb guy doing areobic stuff like riding a bike and stuff...oh well I digress...

Fred to me means the (apparently) British take: the nerd with fenders/lights/racks -- not current with the latest stuff. Anyway, I like all the ambiguity around the term, makes for an even better name.

David: I'd really appreciate getting together and learning how to deal with barriers.

Taylor: not sure on when. We've got all summer. And Portland Cyclewear is out of many of the sizes. I just bought this one from Kucharik. Since it doesn't look like we're going to find 12 people, maybe I'll figure out a way to get existing wool embroidered, then people that want Team Fred jerseys can go find a good wool jersey they like, then we can go to an embroiderer and get a bulk rate?

Fred: on sizing, the bike stuff is never "true" to size. Assume starving European sizing. Especially with Portland Cyclewear, I'm wearing large in t-shirts these days, but the XXL wool trainer i bought a couple years ago is just now fitting...
