    powder coating anyone?

just to let you know, i'm taking a pile of stuff (1 frame, 2 forks, at least one rack) to get powder coated.

On Wade's recommendation, i'm going to Novation out in the valley. Wade is also going to get some cranks powder coated in my batch, since Novation has a minimum size.

My plan is to go clear coat, but I might wimp out and go black...

If you want some small crud powder coated, I"m happy to throw it in for the cost of your job.

I'm hoping to get there in the next couple weeks.

     How much for a frame?

Actually, the recommedation was from Hairy Gary. (just in case things go wrong!) I had a frame and set of cranks done for $130 and some change. They said it was $120 minimum. I'm pretty happy with the way things turned out. Novation did all the prep and they did a nice job tapeing off threads. I didn't have to chase anything. I went with a metallic-like black.

Go with clear. You have my support. And Elissa's. Ten thousand times cooler than just black. Which bike is getting cleared?

"Ten thousand times cooler than just black" Are you sure about this? I'm gonna need to see the data on this one. Black goes with everything, black tie affairs, little black cocktail dresses. When's the last time you heard of a little clear cocktail dress anyways?

Never, but I'd have to see a few to evaluate their worthiness.

Patrick: The bike I'm powder coating is an rb-t (this one). the oragne paint it is not original and it was rattle can painted, so i don't feel bad about re-doing it. I have new forks for it that will get powder coated too, along with the original ones. The plan is to build this bike:

This is alex's rb-t with the same fork I'm putting on there. you can read about it here.

I think it would be cool to keep it clear so you can see the original work on the bridgestone frame.

Then today, I was at the Scoop looking at a sign (patrick: the brain freeze one that is blue, with the yellow-ish exclamation point on it) -- the yellow is really kind of babyshit mustardy and I started thinking about really ugly colors.

What if I found the ugliest color that was available in powdercoating and put it on such a great bike; it might have that ironic opposite effect and look really good... and i would be extra cool because then i could act like i really don't care, "oh, i just found the ugliest paint -- it worked-- whatever..."

John riding on a clear cated RB-T wearing a clear little cocktail dress would be a sight to behold.....Actually a sight I wouldn't want to see.

I think the only merit of a black bike is that it may make the rider look skinnier........

I saw a clear coated bike on Rivendell's website. Elissa and I pretty much thought it was the coolest thing ever. But I looked at it carefully again and realised that I liked it because they decorated the lugs with gold accents which gave it a cool rusted metal look.

I personally would love to see a clear coated bike being ridden around. I can even help you decorate the lugs before clear coat.

As far as baby *** mustard goes I don't think it's ugly enough. It all depends on the hue of the *** and the color of the baby.

I actually had about 7-8 colors picked out that I was considering, but when I got there and met with the production manager they got whittled down pretty quickly. Black was my very last choice. The more off-beat colors would cost more and push out the production time-line. Black is pretty common. Common=cheaper+quicker. I think clear powder will require 1st rate prep, because everything shows. You'll have to see what the prod. mgr says. Maybe there's a better place to do the prep.
